Foreword

We had organized our first seminar on Climate Change with particular reference to the role of the oceans and the effect on the marine environment in 2005, before this issue had captured public attention.  We decided to revisit the subject, not just to further our aim of raising awareness on an issue described as the most urgent and serious of this century but also to re-emphasise the inter-dependence of climate, oceans and atmosphere and to highlight the predominance of the oceans in this equation.  To this end we were able to assemble a panel of speakers that more than did justice to the subject, and in the words of our Chief Guest Mrs Vandana Chavan, herself one of the foremost activists in Pune on this issue, the fact that two of them were foreign speakers brought a fresh and different perspective to bear on the subject.
